A finger bone found in Siberia has revealed the DNA of a completely new type of human from 40,000 years ago.
The find means that we now know of four seperate human species from around that time including neanderthals, modern humans and the recently discovered 'hobbits' on the Indian island of Flores.
A previously unknown type of ancient human, who lived about 40,000 years ago, has been identified using DNA from a finger bone found in Siberia. The extraordinary find brings to four the number of human species thought to have roamed the earth at that time.

I'm by no stretch of the imagination the least bit knowledgable about this subject, but when you consider that there is only a difference in one chromozone between humans and chimps it seems like a bit of jumping of the gun to declare a new speciec of humans based on the discoverey of one 40,000 year old finger bones DNA. Sounds more like someone is trying to get thier alloted 15 minutes of fame. They have determined that it's a human species by analysing the mitochondrial DNA. Neanderthals differ by 202 "letters", this species is only 385 different and chimps 1462. So it is likely that this i... [More]

there is no such thing as the missing link. Or there is an infinite number of missing links. (every time someone finds a transitional fossil, two new missing links are created)

Very Interesting. It is interesting that we can still find such important evidence, when so many of the "Experts" here on these forums keep saying everything has been found and there is no new great finds to be made. I can only imagine what other amazing history changing finds will eventually be found. Also, I had thought our local "Experts" had said Neanderthals never got to Eastern Asia? Guess they were wrong about that too. What else are they wrong about? They always seem so Certain...

For some reason, this reminds me of 'Nebraska Man' Anyone remember hearing or reading about it? 1917 - A molar was found... it was thought to be an ancient human and there was much ado about what the civilization it came from would be like... Then the proverbial 'They' discovered that the tooth hadn't came from a human at all, it came from a critter that was much like a pig. Read and article about it here-- Nebraska Man (or do a search in Google and find a better resource. This was the first one that I came to with the story.) Anyway back to this about the Siberian bone... with it's discovery ... [More]

Could it be the result of neanderthals inter breeding with humans as some suspect was the case. No because it would be similar to both. Maybe just a bunch of innerbreeding going on until a new species emerged.

The data indicates that this branch came off the lineage that beacame us and the neanderthals hundreds of thousands of years before the split between the two previously genetically known species. To me, this suggests Homo Erectus - we haven't gotten DNA from any of them yet, and it's all but certain that our species and the neanderthals came from an offshoot of them.

The find site is in central Asia. See... [More]
