Anti-ageing drugs 'will fuel euthanasia'

Concerns have been raised that drugs designed to stop ageing could ultimately end up fuelling euthanasia.
Drugs available in the future could extend the human lifespan by years, perhaps even indefinately; in a society where old age is no longer an issue people might end up resorting to euthanasia when they feel they've had enough.
People will simply choose to end their own lives in the future, when anti-ageing drugs that could extend lifespans by many years become commonplace, according to an expert on longevity.

I wouldn't mind living as long as possible, as long as the Standard of living was good. I don't want to get old and decrepit at 50 and live that way for another 100 years. Living a youthful life till 100 and then dropping dead would be ideal. For those who are talking Bible, did not most of the Old Testiment figures, Adam to Noah, live an average of 800 years? There is no contradiction in a modern human living as long as possible. But we all eventually must die. I mean as far as men doing things that they aren't supposed to be doing in God's natural order. Those folks who lived that long back ... [More]

I mean as far as men doing things that they aren't supposed to be doing in God's natural order. Those folks who lived that long back then did it because it was their god's will. Now it is more because of what men are doing that are out of accordance with what he wants. What I got from the old stories is that people lived that long because GOD was living with them, and when he left us, he said Humans will live to about 120 years or so. I don't think this is going against HIS order of things, I believe he gives us information as he sees fit and we are just doint HIS will anyways. Anyways HE gave... [More]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_babel Thats the kinda thing i'm talking about, something where man is exceeding his bounds. Where the lord steps in and intervenes. Also, i believe in Revelations it talks about alot of strange things happening that God doesn't like and these are signs of the end times. Im too lazy to go and look, but the Tower of Babel sums up what i was trying to say.

How long would you feasibly be able to work? If you outlive your savings, what kind of shape would you be in?

Wow this is really interesting stuff. I for one would take that pill in a heartbeat, but i don't really worry about death or growing old though. Might feel a bit differently a couple decades down the road. I'd like to know, what do the christians think of this? We are living in an increasingly turbulent and violent society, probably moreso than any other time in history. There is sin and decadence all around. Could this be something that forces their deity to intervene and implement the "rapture" or whatever his plan is? Something like this would have to be a huge slap in the face of the almig... [More]

The average human lifespan will never exceed 90. We just aren't made of stuff that can last much longer than we do now. Throughout history, the majority of the oldest people have been around 70-90. The massive uptick in life expectancy recently has been from eliminating pathologies and infectious diseases that kill you acutely, rather than slowing the inevitable falling apart of our bodies. To make us last longer would require massive genetic change, and would be hardly free of side effects - flies bred to have lifespans double their normal lifespans are massively lethargic and hardly DO anyth... I don't think this is going against HIS order of things, I believe he gives us information as he sees fit and we are just doint HIS will anyways. Anyways HE gave us free will to do what we want to do, That says to me that we can do what we want, but will have to answer for them after our lives here are over. Do you always follow orders? I would rather die than have to live old as a slave even if that would be only mentally. To ... [More]

Ok, so people will start killing themselves when they get bored of life. I don't see the problem. And yes, there will be genetic engineering allowing us to live forever. Just a few years ago they were trying to find the gene in a certain worm I believe, who had the ability to start and stop ageing at will. To say that humans must become lethargic to live even 200 years is a little premature. We are completely new in this field, so of course results we get now are going to change.

Definately not for me, the pace of life is too past as it is, why would i want it to be faster, while im still at a slow pace? Does that mean zimmer frames will get engines ?

Some very rich movie stars have tried stem cell and growth hormon injections to stop or to a small extent reverse aging by a few years. Stalon and Bono at least. The average person will not get a chance to even try this as it will only go so far. Let the powers that be figure out how to transfer a mind in to a new body , THEN they will have some thing!
