Leopards and other big cats ARE on the loose in Britain

Reporter Mark Fletcher investigates the possibility that big cats are currently living in the wilds of Britain.
Only recently two girls were stalked through the woods in Gloucestershire by a large black cat that looked a lot like a panther and this wasn't an isolated incident - sightings of large cats loose in the British Isles have been recorded for years.
My worst fears nearly became a chilling reality last week when two girls, Kim Howells, 15, and her cousin Sophie Gwynne, eight, were stalked in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire - by what appears to have been a huge black cat. Kim described the ‘panther’ as about the size of a Great Dane. ‘We cut through the brambles and just started running,’ she reported afterwards.

Nope, doesn't have to be that similar at all. 95% similarity will likely give hybridisation, probably less, hence false killer whales can hybridise with bottlenose dolphin. Is there that much of a difference between a lion and a tiger? I was not aware that wholphins existed, thank you.The UK cats could be hybrids, as was the case with the polar bear/grizzly hybrids being considered cryptids at one time.

Is there that much of a difference between a lion and a tiger? The sexes of the species carry different gene sets for one. It's why Ligers have the growth issue they do. Female lions carry a gene which eventually halts growth. In tigers the males carry the same gene. So when you mix a male Lion and a female Tiger, neither animal has the gene to halt growth and you end up with Hercules here http://www.cryptomundo.com/wp-content/uploads/liger.jpg

The lion and the tiger are the same animal and can interbreed, only their coloration is different. I can understand why a lion is able to survive the winter, but not a cheetah(it wouldn't run very fast on snow and would likely starve in winter). There are snow leopards and pumas, they would also fair well in the winter. That is why I mentioned the Florida panther, as it is nothing more than a mountain lion/puma and can survive winter in it's natural habitat. edit What I am getting at here is that these big cat sightings in the UK are hard to believe unless they are cats that can survive winter... I skimmed the article, because it seemed a little silly, starting with the fact that if those girls had been chased by a 'big cat', surely the end result would have been 100 fold more newsworthy? Would inbreeding in a small population make it more likely that the gene for melanism would be expressed? Have to say I find it hard to believe that anyone couldn't tell the difference between a dog and a cat considering that they are so common in modern society. It just doesn't hold up as a reason to explain away big cat sightings, unless we are talking about sightings from such a distance that only ... [More]

Would a cheetah be able to hunt in the snow? It is being fed at the zoo. Are not the jaguars being brought inside to a heated enclosure when they are not on display?

I wouldnt say we get too much snow in the UK, Camouflage wise it would be at a disadvantage , but then there would be pleanty of sheep in the fields, id say theyd have comfy enoug living LOL

Cheetahs sure do run fast in the snow, I have seen it; they look like rockets kicking up clouds of snow in their trail. And did you see that jaguar pic? It's relaxing on a stone in the middle of snow. Fernando, these big cats are able to grow a thicker fur to protect them from the cold. And I have no doubts whatsover if given the chance, these big cats can breed and multiply in Northern Europe. I don't say they do now, I only say ... [More]

Yes I agree there certainly isn't a significant population of these animals in the UK, but there certainly is a few about for instance a few years back in Gary's wood co Antrim Northern Ireland a motorist caught the beast on camera, there have been few instances of sighting the animals as was believed there may have been several of the black great Dane sized cats, This was further backed up by livestock deaths over quite a large area, these black cats would travel great distances by night and stay away from populated areas, there have been no recent sightings of the animals but no remains have... I guarantee there are big cats in britain not only have there been countless eye witnesses, photos and videos there has been forensic evidence and farmers have shot and killed these big cats. there is a website with pictures of cats that have been shot on farmers land in the uk with the species and size of the animal. As a previous poster stated "there are 100 black jaguars in the uk" nobody said they was black jaguars and the pictures of the cats that have been shot by farmers are all different colours and species including lynx and jungle cats. What many people dont realise is that these cat... [More]
