In the late 20th century a group of scientists devised plans to send humans on a trip to the outer solar system.
The plan was part of a technical exercise and represented one of the biggest dreams of mankind. A spaceship powered by a 100MW nuclear reactor was conceived that could propel astronauts at great speed to the distant planets by 2050.
Scientists are usually a realistic bunch—our salaries depend on proposing projects that are doable with the tools we have in our hands, and our plans usually involve prudent small steps rather than aiming for risky big leaps. But we sometimes dream too, and when we dream, we dream big, even if we dream very seriously.
