An old radio at a World War 2 heritage centre has been picking up vintage broadcasts despite having no power.
The old wireless radio at Montrose Air Station has been heard on several occassions to be playing vintage music from the war along with speeches from Winston Churchill despite the fact that it isn't connected to any source of electricity.
A 70-year-old radio at a Scottish heritage centre has been picking up vintage broadcasts featuring Winston Churchill and the music of Glen Miller. The Pye valve wireless at Montrose Air Station, a heritage centre that tells the story of the men and women who served there, has no power and is not connected to any source of electricity.

Yes its possible for this old radio to operate without any visible power source, Ever heard of crystal radio sets? They need no batteries, getting their power from the radio waves themselves. As a boy I used to build them from old fashioned safety razor blades (Acting as the crystal) and copper bell wire, and lately using a germanium diode as the crystal. You also need a sensitive earphone and a quiet room to listen in as there is no amplification circuit to adjust the volume. There are plenty of plans on the net, this one is from www.Bizzarelabs.com Case closed.

While I appreciate the idea it could pick up without power and that they could bounce back...Why is it only that radio picking up only WWII transmissions? Surely there'd be atleast one other radio on that site say in the staff room maybe, that could pick them up with greater clarity...Also, why do we not pick up these bounced back transmissions more frequently, especially on more modern radios which you'd expect should be more efficient than older radios... Why is it just that one radio just happens to pick up seventy year old transmissions?

I remember when I was fourteen, I was about to listen to my walkman that my brother bought me but I noticed that the batteries were flat. As I removed the 2 AA batteries, I noticed that the cassette player motor was revolving like how it does when its operating and I could see and feel the head spinning. It kept going for about a minute or two since the play button was depressed and only stopped spinning when I pressed the stop button. I remember pressing the play button again a few times to see if I could get it to spin on its own but had no luck. At the time the walkman had no tape inside bu... [More]

I am a fairly well-known collector/archivist of Old Time Radio programs (hence my screen name) and I am active on more than a dozen OTR forums, on a daily basis. Absolutely nothing of this story has appeared on any of those websites! So I'm extremely dubious. By the way, very similar stories, equally phony, were "reported" in the American supermarket tabloids 25 years ago.

hmmm very odd, in a similar story my computer speakers seem to constantly blast out random broadcasts from various national anthems to speeches (JFK ect.) an much more such as songs and ancient sounding radio broadcasts. its doing it right now - the volume is o however there is a old foreign broadcast coming through. if anyone has any idea what i'm talking about please reply.

I actually have what I believe could be a plausable scientific explination for this which is two-fold 1) The power issue: I remember learning about resonance and crystal radio in physics: A crystal radio is the simplest kind of radio. Most radios you buy use complicated electronics to make a strong copy of the sound. A crystal radio is a simple kind of radio that just picks up the wave and changes it straight into sound. It does not use separate power or batteries to make a stronger copy of the sound. It gets all of its power only from the radio wave. So I am saying even if this is powered, it... [More]

Interesting. I knew someone that had an electronic organ that would play CB radio talk when it was turned off. The culprit was a high power CB nearby. The radio waves propagate inside the electronics and the sound comes out the speakers, even when off. (don't know if any part of it had power when off though). Bleed through does happen, especially when there is power. Don't know about this one though. Maybe it traveled through a wormhole and back. I deal with the paranormal all the time, so it would not surprise me if a "spirit" could manipulate it to play.
