Do we perceive north as "uphill" ?

A new experiment has demonstrated that some people prefer going south because north seems like going uphill.
The experiment saw volunteers pick paths that went southwards over northwards even when the northern route was shorter, the research is based on the concept that we associate travelling north as "uphill" and that we think it is inherently more difficult.
People making travel plans may unwittingly heed a strange rule of thumb — southern routes rule. In a new experiment, volunteers chose paths that dipped south over routes of the same distance that arched northward, perhaps because northern routes intuitively seem uphill and thus more difficult, researchers suggest.

I believe the Ancient Egyptians regarded South as 'up'.

I have never thought of the hill thing before. When I refer to a town on the map that is north of my I call it up.

Is that why us northerners are hard work?

It's weird, when I was younger, whenever the channel number on the cable tv box went up I thought of the number ascending to the left. Similar kind of.

i always thought coming home from a long drive seemed like going down hill, even though i knew it wasn't Same here. I think I do kind of fall into what they're talking about in the article, or something similar. It's not a conscious thought process whatever it is, that's for sure. But it does feel different somehow traveling north vs traveling south.

Is this weird or what. I think odd numbers are left and even numbers are right. I don't really think that but I'm right handed and prefer even numbers lol.

The tendancy to prefer going South may be caused by genetics. I'm interested in seeing how many of the people participating in the experiment have strong British decent in them because in Britain going North usually does mean a trip uphill. If its an American experiment then you have your answer. You've inherited some weird behaviour from us British lol. I have some other wierd urges too such as I dont like living inland as it panics me. I prefer the coast. May be the same sort of thing. The English would always ask about the weather in polite conversation because it changing could mean terrib... [More]
