Thank you, Still Waters. David Livingstone has been a hero of mine since I was a wee lad.

Amazing article. I'm glad they were able to recover the text on the letter.

Technology never ceased to amaze me. It's sad to read Mr. Livingstone passed away suffering immensely though. :S R.I.P.

Thanks for sharing that article Still. I've always wondered if it was the "Age of Exploration" that brought out men such as Stanley or if it was men like Stanley that brought on the Age of Exploration. Do men like these still live today? Would you or I be able/willing to go through the privations they did?

Stanley came well equipped, the true hero here was Livingstone - this is not to disparage Stanley at all, he was following signs to find him, and what a monumental task that was to be!! There is no-one in this world now to rival their adventures (as opposed to adventurism). It is sad to think that many of the younger generation only have Indiana Jones as a role model:hmm: Livingstone truly loved Africa, and he just knew that slavery was wrong and despicable. The same cannot be said of such figures as Washington. Great article Still... thanks for sharing Where are todays great Role models??

It's tough to be an uncommon man, but I'm sure a new generation of leaders will emerge soon. We have glorified greed and villains for too long.

here's something in this story about David and his letter deciphered at last I don't know what you guys think but its bit of something to read though. By RAPHAEL G. SATTER, Associated Press Writer Raphael G. Satter, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jul 2, 1:18 pm ET LONDON – The contents of a long-illegible letter written by famed 19th century explorer David Livingstone have finally been deciphered, a British university said Friday, nearly 140 years after he wrote of his despair at ever leaving Africa alive. Researchers say that the letter — which required state of the art imaging technique... [More]

There is no-one in this world now to rival their adventures (as opposed to adventurism). There are archaeologists out there still making new discoveries. I imagine that they have it a bit easier nowadays with the advent of satellite phones, gps, electric generators, etc., but they are still making new discoveries all the time. Brazilian archaeologist Denise Schaan still does not believe in the legendary land El Dorado, although she and her team keep finding signs of an ancient and advanced civilization in the western Amazon basin. The signs point to a people that lived there more than a millenn... Yep...there are still some good people. The best story to emerge from the football/soccer World Cup, for me, was learning that the player eventually voted as the best in the tournament actually took up the sport professionally to pay for his sisters medical bills. Not front-page or even back-page news though. Which is sad.
