Several of the world's leading powers are combining forces to finance a joint nuclear fusion project.
For years nuclear fusion has hinted at a future powered by unlimited, clean energy but to date has remained outside our grasp.
It is one of mankind’s most daring experiments – a quest to produce virtually limitless clean energy that, if successful, would revolutionise life on Earth by harnessing the explosive power of the sun.

That is good news, I'm surprised the World's suppliers of oil did not pay off the right people to stop this research. Maybe there is a glimer of hope for humanity. Goods news indeed, but I think the world needs a coherent Theory Of Everything first Rethinking Einstein: The end of space-time

Everyone has their price, especially those with power. Personally, I hope this project is a baby step towards a common interest of our planet. Appears to be. We'll have to wait and see.

I can't see this yielding anything usable for quite a while. I doubt the oil companies will take kindly to being rendered less than useless until their reserves fall far below what they have at the moment. They already have enough money to last them forever but their greed will overcome the need to help the planet.

When I read about it, Im always fearful of it being uncontrollable. It,I believe, could be self generating , it would devour matter with increasing intensity as it grows...

Well I think its too little too late tbh. The damage has already been done. If this was done 20 Years ago or so there may have been a chance. It will take the earth a long time to recover even a % of what we've manged to do in the last 30 to 40 years. Its a start Ill give them that, but its going to take a lot more than this to fix things!!! Nice post

Oil would still be in demand. Backup generators, other small engines, plastics, etc. Also all sorts of motorized boats and ships. Not to mention the fact that cars and trucks are sure to be around for awhile.

Not to mention the fact that cars and trucks are sure to be around for awhile. True, but some preliminary steps are visible. We do have electrical/gasoline hybrid vehicules just piercing the automotive market. We are also being exposed to wind and solar power as alternative energy sources. As I see it, we are in a time where ecological conscience is influencing transition in a way which may affect the evolution of our technology. It should be interesting to see how ... [More]

Not arguing, just pointing out... And jet airplanes; an electric plane that carries 200 people 300 miles is simply impractical. And I don't think my son could pick up a starter used hybrid car for 500-1,000, even decades from now, as I'm sure the expensive batteries would need replacement. Also, many vehicle body parts are oil-based, including tires. Our society is increasingly gadget-freakish, which heavily relies on plastic which require oil. I could go on and on and on. Point being, even if electricity were absolutely free, our societal infrastructure is heavily dependent on petroleum for c... [More]

That is good news, I'm surprised the World's suppliers of oil did not pay off the right people to stop this research. Maybe there is a glimer of hope for humanity. The oil people wouldn't stop them that would be stupid. Any investor knows that you go with 'the flow' in a sense. The thing is we all know that oil isn't going to be here forever, even oil companies know this. So instead of being stupid and knocking them off, the oil companies/owners are already I can assure you investing in private shares to such alternatives. They have enough money to invest in such alternatives already, (ie wind... [More]
