A newly discovered species of spider in Madagascar has been found to spin the world's largest spider webs.
The Darwin's bark spider spins webs as large as 25m right across whole rivers allowing it to catch insects that fly over the water. The exact process the spider uses to spin a web of such size over such a distance is still being researched.
A newly discovered species of spider living in Madagascar makes the world's longest known web, spanning 25m. The spider also makes the largest orb web yet found for any spider, and constructs it out of the most tough biomaterial yet known, say scientists.

Can anybody find how big this spider actually is? *freaked out* The article and anywhere else only mentions the size of the web, not the spider... According to this, the females are 2 centimetres plus legs and the males are teeny.

Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly, ‘Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I’ve a many curious things to shew when you are there.” Oh no, no,” said the little Fly, “to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair can ne’er come down again.”

i could've sworn i thought i once saw a golden orb spider here in texas. It gave me a fright when i almost ran into it in midair. weird didn't know they're from madagascar. oh i have had my fair share of run into spiders, once had a tarantula just walk straight into my room my heart was pumping fast, lol. and another time up north i ran into a black widow spider without even knowin till i turned the cardboard around. :| seriously spiderz are a nuisance. i do know they can weave big webs i recalled one built off the high branches of a tree all the way down to the grass.

If I came upon something like that monstrosity unexpectedly, I would likely die on the spot. Never mind the fact that I'm nineteen years old and in reasonably sound health; I would have three different heart attacks and a stroke. Do not want.

Quote (at end of article)... "Other spiders are capable of weaving giant webs. For example, one huge web complex was found in 2007 in Texas. But this web complex was not the work of one large spider. Rather, millions of small ones weaved a series of interlaced webs that ended up covering an area twice the size of a football field. " AWESOME!!!

I don't have a problem with spiders, but this made me shudder... Creepy!

Why did it take so long to discover these guys if their webs are so big? They remind me of the movie 'Arachnophobia'. My kids were really freaked out about spiders after that! Just remember that most spiders kill and eat alot of other creepy crawlies that we don't want wandering around our homes (roaches, flies, etc), so while I don't want to be around them, I respect them.

Madagascar golden orb spiders And yep, birds are prey. Nibs Nibs, YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!!! When I lived down south I had a giant web that looked like that although much smaller but the spider in the middle was the one on the left! I was scared for my 6 pound POODLE!!!! It was probably a cousin to that one or something. CREEPY! Of course we had scorpions and black widows too. Really creepy bugs and rattle snakes, soooooo glad we moved.
