Buddhist monks mummified themselves

In the early 1800s Buddhist monks practiced a long and turturous process of self mummification.
Very few monks actually succeeded in the process and it was thought to be only folklore until bodies were found this year. The exact procedure took years of slowly starving and poisoning their own bodies before finally sealing themselves inside a stone tomb until they were dead.
Would you slowly commit suicide for the sole purpose of religious enlightenment? There are approximately 24 Buddhist monks who did so in the Yamagata Prefecture that occurred in the early 1800s. This practice was folklore until Buddhist monk mummies were discovered in July of 2010.

apparently you didn't read the article I posted about the Buddhists attacking a christian church in Cambodia. I'm sure you live 1000 miles from there and were unaware of the violence and hate Buddhists have towards other religions. Perhaps you could try to read more about world events. Perhaps I should fit that into my busy study schedule. Why thank you. But, I have to agree with the post above mine.

I read what you posted and I pose a query. What was evil in this? Expand please. This is evil "Buddhist authority [...] force non-Buddhists to convert to Buddhism" "Buddhist authority [...] invoked Buddhist nationalist sentiments" Do you agree with forcing people to convert? How does forcing people to convert and destroying non-buddhist churches constitute a peaceful religion? Do you agree with what these Buddhists are doing? Also perhaps you don't understand what Buddhists nationalism is. That's the creation of a theocratic state. Explain how Buddhism is a peaceful and harmless religion, in l... [More]

" The hate buddhists have for other religions" ha ha ha ha ha ha lmfao you are great!! And you obviously didn't read much more yourself!!! But like I said your opinion is ok for you. Besides to me ( only my opinion not stating fact)you appear very comical right now. And I do appreciate some good levity. It's clear this is intended to hurt my feelings. You succeeded.

Listen, I could go on forever informing you guys of violent hateful crimes perpetrated by Buddhists against those of other religions. Maybe you can tell me why you persistently believe Buddhists are peaceful and harmless? That won't be necessary, you have made your point. Can this thread please get back on topic and less of the bickering. Thank you.

Embarrassment I am truly sorry. When I read that I hurt your feelings it pulled my heart strings bad. I never wanted to hurt your feelings. I just want you to know that I agree that there are extremists amongst the buddhists. You are right there has been violence. And while I still see buddhism as beautiful, that does not mean ugly things do not happen. truly accept my appology and know I never meant to hurt you. Even if it was just a little it still should not have happened. I have really enjoyed debating this with you, as the strong debate forces me to consider the larger picture. Thank you ... [More]
