Scientists have come up with substantial evidence to suggest that Phobos was formed during a catastrophic event.
The exact origin of Mars' two moons has been a topic of debate for years, but now scientists believe they have firm evidence pointing to a massive collision with Mars blasting off rocks that would have coalesced to form Phobos.
Scientists say they have uncovered firm evidence that Mars's biggest moon, Phobos, is made from rocks blasted off the Martian surface in a catastrophic event. The origin of Mars's satellites Phobos and Deimos is a long-standing puzzle.
