A woman who lost control of her left hand after surgery to cure her epilespy shares her story.
Karen Byrne, a 55 year old New Jersey woman, has purportedly lived with Alien Hand Syndrome for 28 years. The disorder (which causes unintended action in the afflicted body part[s]) has affected Mrs Byrne since she underwent radical surgery to cure her of a severe case of epilepsy. Doctors believe that the syndrome is a side effect of severing the corpus callosum, a small cluster of nerves that keeps the two halves of the brain harmonized. She reports that before she was given medicine to keep the disorder under control her left hand would snub out cigarettes, remove things from her purse, attack other parts of her body and even attempt to remove her clothing.
"Dr O'Connor said, 'Karen what are you doing? Your hand's undressing you'. Until he said that I had no idea that my left hand was opening up the buttons of my shirt. "
