Planet discovery rekindles ET life debate

Recent discoveries of planets outside our solar system make finding alien life seem more and more likely.
NASA's Kepler telescope has detected over 1200 planets orbiting distant stars and at least 54 of those are thought to be similar enough to the Earth to be candidates for finding alien life. Recent studies have suggested that as many as 500 million such habitable planets could exist within our own galaxy alone.
Data from Nasa's Cassini probe revealed the complex chemistry on the surface of Titan, which experts say is the only moon around the planet to have a dense atmosphere. Experts suggested that life forms may have been breathing in the planet’s atmosphere and also feeding on its surface’s fuel.

Alas there is no evidence of life anywhere else other than our own planet. It's often stated how arrogant people must be to assume in such a vast Universe that there is no other life.Well I am sorry...but it is the opposite that is true.It makes a mockery of all our knowledge and sciences. Hello and welcome to UM! I think you're wrong to speak in such absolutes. It's not true, what you're saying there really, simply because the universe is soooo big. Statistics is maths and maths is science..... Sorta - you know what I mean... I'm saying that to suggest that it's statistically probably that lif... [More]

Why is it foolish to believe that ETI is visiting us here and now? Why is it ok to make one sweeping generalization and not another? Do we have concrete proof aliens are visiting us? No. But there's compelling circumstantial evidence, therefor it's not foolish. I don't care if you disagree that's it's a possibility; I do care that labels such as foolish get attatched to differing opinions. Well said Kali74! I find OverSword a tad offensive with, 'You would have to be nearly as foolish to believe it was secretly visiting us here and now.' OverSword surely you realise there is a MOUNTAIN of very... [More]

One must first open there eyes and mind to all possibilities,Life as we know it ? Thats a Good one all in its self. Traveling from very Far ? Thats a Good one too ! What maybe far to one maybe a blink of the mind to another. We are all we know at this point in Space and Time right? The next few years may bring a whole new set of rules for us to understand and learn. Like how to Live among ourselfs without all the comforts were used too! And then again we just dont know what tomorrow may hand us ! I know this for a fact though ! We are not alone The proof is everyone can imagine a universe full... [More]

Just like area 51, we don't have much proof on that. So it must not be real. I'm surprise closed minded people are even on this site, just like the bible don't take it to serious or you'll become a christen.

Here's an amusing turn of events. What if there are primitive aliens on the planet or moon of your choice, in the sense of people at the sort of stage we were at a few thousand Years ago. And what if they saw one of our Probes. Then we might be the Sky Gods that they look forward to the return of, when it will herald a blissful new future for all man(or the equivalent) kind? we will be contacted by them when we become one race of love

How do reconcile the the figures in the article with the figures at PlanetQuest, NASA?

I always think of that scene in Galaxy Quest when they shuttle down to an alien planet to get that mineral they needed. The commander simply opened the door and stepped out. The one guy went nuts, because they hadn't done any testing of the atmosphere or anything. Just like a typical scifi where humans just drop down onto a planet and they can breath fine, there are no microbes waiting to infect them, and so forth. Sure, there are likely uncountable numbers of planets out there that can support life. The real question is whether they can support our forms of life. (I'm not going without my cat... [More]
