Spider infestations incite Mazda recall

Mazda says a high potential for spiders to build webs in critical parts of the car is behind the recall.
Japanese car manufacturer Mazda has issued a recall of more than 50,000 of their Mazda 6 sedans sold in the United States because a specific species of spider is apt to build its web in a critical component.

The component, called an evaporator canister vent line, works to clean air that is emitted from the gas tank. Strangely, yellow sac spiders have been found to set up house within these vent lines, preventing the passage of air and creating a fire hazard.

To date there have been 20 reports of such infestations.
"A certain type of spider may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line and this may cause a restriction of the line," Mazda said in a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Wow. It's a good thing my sister doesn't own a Mazda. She's flip out knowing this.

I own a 2010 Mazda5--maybe it's time for a tune up before my arachnophobic husband won't ride with me again.
