Interface allows the paralysed to play music

A new brain-computer interface allows paralysed patients to play music using just their brain.
The ingenious computer system is linked directly to the brain and works by picking up the tiny electrical impulses of neurons. The research is aimed towards providing the system to patients everywhere for creative and therapeutic use.
Evidence suggests that musical participation can be beneficial for people with neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Parkinson's disease. But people who have almost no muscle movement have generally been excluded from such benefits, and can enjoy music only through passive listening.

I've been talking about this sort of technology for a while now. I believe its the forerunner to mainstream interface systems. Eventually we'll just use thoughts to control all our telecomunications gizmos and entertainment systems. People would love it!

That is really awesome! This will greatly improve the lives of these patients, and overall - just make them happier. I'm still waiting for someone to create a dream recorder of some kind. I've always wanted to be able to "play back" my dreams

Honestly, I believe there are certain discoveries that should only be used for certain things..even using a remote and not standing up to turn on a T.V. seems like a slap in someone who is paralyzed face's. It's cool to know we can do it, but that's really the problem now a days. This type of technology is great for people that need it..not people who want it..but that's my opinion.

I've always wanted to be able to "play back" my dreams You should just start practicing Lucid Dreaming. Or Astral Projection. Tis' a journey to be played back to you every night if you can get it down packed. Check out Binaural Beats, they help with the meditation state. Certain frequencies can change our lives!

I would love to try this out myself. I know the theory behind playing and composing on a piano, through years of guitar, but lack the time or patience these days to really become a good piano player. What if playing it were as easy as visualizing what needs to happen? I would be composing symphonies in a couple of years I'll bet.

that is neat. sometimes ill drop something and my instinct tells me to just point at it or think about it and it will be there, and it never does happen. I think since its so easy to do that type of stuff on a computer, to undo or redo stuff and copy/paste and you know etc. even on tv if theres a commercial you just passed and if u got a DVR or tivo u just press rewind and its all there again, i guess me personally, im not sure if everyone else? but im so used to controlling everything that, when theres something i cannot control like just turning the light switch off, while im far away from i... This is nothing new. Bill Gates has a music system which detects your mood and plays music accordingly, and he has had this system implemented for quite a period of time (to my knowledge).
