NASA have held a press conference to reveal details of their mission to send astronauts to an asteroid.
Planned to take place by 2025 the mission would see a manned spacecraft move alongside the asteroid to deploy equipment and astronauts to and from the surface, collecting data and samples.
Astronauts are lining up to be candidates for an extreme trip of a lifetime. In a press conference this morning NASA released the details of its plan to land astronauts on an asteroid by 2025.

Maybe there's an asteroid heading to us they haven't told us about, Armageddon style Don't say that! lol too late...he said it.... as soon as I saw this thread I thought 'Apophis'... from the OP link Lockheed Martin is Nasa's prime contractor for the Orion project. The company said it built the $35million, 41,000-square-foot test facility, called the Space Operations Simulation Center, at company expense. The first Orion capsule is being assembled in another building at Lockheed Martin's Waterton Canyon site. It will be used for ground testing and could possibly be launched into a suborbital te... This is cool but the problem with NASA is it changes its mission with each new president and nothing much gets done.

I would like to go, but only on the condition that I get to take a small tunnel boring machine with me, and one of those inflatable rooms NASA designed that never actually went onto the ISIS... Oh, and the asteroid will then be mine

How anyone could consider this a waste of time is beyond me. If we ever have need to divert an asteroid that is on a collision course with Earth, missions like this would be critical baby steps to achieve. If the universe deems that we need to be incinerated, who are we mere humans to intercede?

A total waste of time not to metion it is something NASA will never follow through with. There should already be a moon base by now or at least in the process of having already returned to the moon. You speak as if the present situation is somehow NASAs fault; that they're not following through with something? You also wonder why there's no "Moon base" or why we haven't returned to the Moon yet? You do realize that Obama cancelled Constellation, right? Follow that reasoning back and you'll find several administrations and Congresses who are responsible for this state of affairs. It has never b... [More]
