Detecting life through alien mining

One astrophysicist has a new way to search for life - to look for alien mining in asteroid belts.
Rather than focusing our energies solely on radio frequencies, one scientist has come up with another option for detecting the existence of life on other planets by searching asteroid belts for evidence of alien mining operations.
We might be able to pick up on an unusual chemical imbalance in the belt caused by the removal of certain desired elements. The alien miners would likely pull apart the larger asteroids in search of vital materials, which would throw off the size distribution of the asteroids. The mining operations might also create huge amounts of dust, which would throw off our temperature readings.

You do need materials to build craft and if they want to preserve their planet(s) they may seek out lifeless asteroids as an alternative source. Also, we should not be so arrogant to believe that what we perceive as the visible and audible spectrum may be vastly different to what other species may be able to see and hear.

Good points, An advanced race may even need not make anything to get along. They might live in just an universe of enegry ! All that is known is whats to be Learned!

Ok go on, try their luck exploring one asteroids in 3 or 5 years time and there are thousands and millions of asteroids out there, it's like scooping a teaspoon of sand in a desert. Speaking of detecting why not spend time developing detectors or instruments that can detect sounds, hidden objects in space, signals etc.. a beam that can see through a camouflage of glowing objects like that.

What is this strange image, and how large would it be, assuming that it's a picture of a real object? And what could this be? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8Blmik6tek&feature=related

It seems rather a pity that no one else has offered any comments on the anomalies. Maybe it's because it's in this thread, and the people who don't believe in speculation don't bother looking in to speculative threads. Maybe it might be worth putting them in a separate thread, as it would be very interesting to see what other people have to say about them; whether they're just "camera artifacts" or whether there might be something there.

I agree 747, it would be interesting to here some expert views on these images. fascinating that the green is similar in both images. Also in the first pic, a... [More]

If humans powerized every comet and asteroid in the inner solar system, would it really create a cloud that could be detected dozens or hundreds of light years away? I kind of doubt it. We''l be able to build technology to actually visualize the planets of other systems first. Anyway, wouldn't this sign be just as short lived as radio communications? Scientists speculate that technology eventually develops so that broadcast communications are obsolete. So basically there is like a couple hundred year window in the tens or hundreds of thousands of years of possible technical development of a ci... [More]

That for me is a waste of time, money and energy. Assuming they are really intelligent do you think they will leave a trace to be detected, we can only see them if ever they wanted to. Why not try to look for something useful, lets say fuels somewhere in the galaxy might lie a vast infinite source of energy that these aliens are using, that might make these aliens no need of planets to make their living, studying fuels will conclude to the creation of machines and engines and these is where the knowledges will develop. Why do so many people assume "intelligent" equals "invisible"? Seems to me,... [More]

You never know, maybe they left mining structures behind. That would cause a stir...
