Sci-fi fans undergo surgery for elvish ears

A new craze is seeing fans of Middle Earth having their ears sculpted to look like an elf.
The painful looking operation involves the top cartilage of their ears sliced apart and then sewn back together to create an elf-like pointed ear. "It was just something I thought would be fascinating," said one fan who underwent the procedure.
The elf ears craze is believed to have been brought on by films such as Lord of the Rings and Avatar, as well as HBO’s comedy television series Bored to Death.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that with all this going on, is the human race really that insecure about itself that some of us have to imitate aspects of our own cultural invention, or even other animals, in order to feel at ease with ourselves? I can understand wanting to imitate animals; they have aspects that we do not (but still... they USE those aspects because the HAVE to or they will die), but changing your appearance to imitate something that comes from popular culture? (mind you... says he that named himself Urisk...). Perhaps I should tatoo my body green and get octopus tentacl... [More]

Well, if it makes you happy! It won't when it gets in the way of getting hired on a job. Seriously, no one will be inclined to hire someone who looks like a freak-show. Admittedly some of the mods look cool but in the real world people want to deal with people, not elves, tigers, Klingon wannabe's. This is not to say I wouldn't mind a doctor or whatever that had pointy ears or such but...the professional world doesn't look kindly on such mods and I can understand that too. I guess it is ok for kids and teens but once they apply for colleges and jobs or even the military then their reality chec... [More]

Dur!!! This is really nothing new, Native Americans used to wear the skins of animals in ritual and in the hunt. Had all sorts of legends of shape shifters and magical animals. People in Mexico would strech out their lips and strech or compress their heads... People in Afirca did the same, lips, nose, ears, bumps under the skin, and enlongated necks. Some would do this to imitate animals, others would do it for mystical reasons (such as imitating a magical elf). So you dont get it.... if you have an ear ring, then you too have modified your body. Yes yes, Ancient Egyptians worshipped anthropom... [More]

Calmn down cowboy, no one put in queston your intelligence. I Dur...ed at this statement, "is the human race really that insecure about itself that some of us have to imitate aspects of our own cultural invention, or even other animals, in order to feel at ease with ourselves?" because I would think it seems quite obvious to anyone who has ever met a teenager no disrespect intended.

Hey no worries, and no harm done. I probably overreacted myself, but it's just one of my pet-hates. But back on track; as I said I can understand the want to imitate animals, certainly from a spiritual POV. And tatoos, piercings, sure, it's good to express yourself, but I can't understand why someone would want to change themselves into something their not. From what I gather, historically, members of the aforementioned cultures would "call upon" (for lack of a better term) aspects of an animal to aid them in some way- they wouldn't run about pretending to be that animal day-in, day-out. Other... [More]

I just think that this is just silly. Ya see, I have a bump on my right ear that extends about a couple centimeters, resembling exactly what these people are trying to imitate, and mine grew NATURALLY FROM BIRTH. So...these people are just miserable morons in my opinion, because I was always made fun of for my ear.

Saw this on the news last week. Personally, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It's barely noticeable.

Why in the world can't people just deal with what they are? I can see fixing something that's obviously misshapen but to purposely modify they body to look like a character in a movie is silly IMO. Sure, you'll get attention but is it the attention you really want? Will someone want to take you home to meet the parents? Are you going to get that promotion or even a job like that? Will you garner any respect at all? While I always treat people respectfully no matter how they look I can tell you that you will in fact run into all of the above questions and there is no shortage of cruelty out the... [More]

I like human rounded ears, makes us look cuter, cuddlier and less aggressive than we truly are!

Mr Haworth’s operation costs $600 for both ears and takes about 20 minutes, but he is not allowed to use any anaesthetic because he is not a doctor, reported ABC. You've got to be joking. These people are going under the knife for purely cosmetic (arguably mental) reasons and he's not even a doctor? They're insane.
