Its a topic we tend not to think about - what will happen to mankind over the next few billion years ?
If we've managed to survive at all humans will be completely unlike the way we are today, when our Sun expires in 6 billion years time things will be unimaginably different. "It won't be humans who witness the sun's demise: It will be entities as different from us as we are from a bug," says Astronomer Royal Sir Martin Rees.
The occasion for Rees’s mind-bending assertion was his acceptance of the 2011 Templeton Prize, an annual cash award of $1. 7 million, payable to individuals who have made “an exceptional contribution to affirming life’s spiritual dimension. "

And now were back to hating humanity... Good point, I want to know why humans hate humanity.

I was thinking of other unavoidable events like Ice ages when I found this... Risks to civilization, humans and planet Earth I doubt that would be much of a problem, I would think we would have plenty of advanced notice before the Ice Age actually started seriously affecting us. The problem would be the millions displaced by the growing glaciers and changing climates. It would be tough times, but we survived the last Ice Age.

I wonder what the next species to gain ascendant or emergent consciousness will be. My bets are on the polar bears, so if they survive the innevitable destruction of habitat they could be the ones to displace us by the time of the next ice age. Either that or the jelly fish will take over and probably make it out of the solar system before we do.

And also, if we arrive at the singularity in 2042, we may no longer be here anyway, or if we are, we probably won't be recognizable for very long. Certainly not billions of years. Look at the changes in us in just a million or so and it's geometric with no technological/environmental pressure. If the Grey's are truly our ancestors which I strongly suspect from years of clues, then they must have avoided their own techno singularity. Wonder if they'll tell us how? On second thought, did they?

We will die with this planet if we don't move off it in time. Could be sooner than we think, we should be working towards that instead of killing each other over petty crap :/

Some member from the Octopoda order will probably be a good candidate in the distant future. There were some interesting lectures at my university regarding this. Flexibility and intelligence are two of the key traits (not the biggest but important) that eventually led to our dominance and these are traits that the Octopi share with us. We are to vertebrates as they are to invertebrates. Good point. Squid are an incredibly intelligent species. Not sure if we have octopi in enough numbers but maybe all the inverterbrates will band together and take us on. Tentacles has gotta be better than oppo... [More]

I think we'll last. But we don't physically evolve anymore, really.
