NASA contemplates 2016 planetary mission

NASA are planning to pick from three possible destinations for a $425 million mission in 2016.
One possibility would be to send a mission to Mars to look at the planet's interior for the first time, another to study in detail the surface of a comet's nucleus and the third to land in and explore one of Titan's methane-ethane seas.
NASA has selected three science investigations from which it will pick one potential 2016 mission to look at Mars' interior for the first time; study an extraterrestrial sea on one of Saturn's moons; or study in unprecedented detail the surface of a comet's nucleus.

I agree. I think we should send the next big mission to Titan or Europa even. The article did not mention a manned project. This mission will be robotic. Oh, and never say never

This is a differcult choice all three missions look good so I might have to chose between Mars or Titan.

I'd say Mars over Titan. Planets Moons

After the relatively recent findings of more methane than expected in the Martian atmosphere, my vote is for Mars. I'd like them to find out the source of the methane. If the planet is thought to be geologically "dead", then there's got to be another reason why there continues to be methane releases. Whether that's by some biological process or something even more exotic....the answer will change almost everything we know about that planet.

Titan! I'd love to see what in in it's oceans...

It's a toss up between Mars and Titan. Titans oceans are a must see. But then Mars is a planet and has other worthwhile aspects too! Do them both!

Do them both! That's rather the point, there is only enough money in the budget to do one of these missions.

I know! Hurrrumpppppphhhhhh! It's a healthy thing. Remember these are just the three finalists, initially there would have been many more proposals. NASA whittles these proposals down based on many criteria such as scientific value, likelihood of success, likelihood of remaining within budget, education benefits and the development of new technology. No one has even mention the comet hopper. I would love to see the results from this too, but NASA will be sensible and pick a mission not because it is "sexy" but because it is the best scientific value for money. Another thing that should be reme... [More]
