An unusual photograph of an unidentified sea creature in the UK has generated substantial debate.
Taken by photographer Mark Harrison the creature was spotted in the Mersey off the Seacombe Ferry. Paul Renolds of the Blue Planet Aquarium commented "it is virtually impossible to actually identify," but added that it is the time of year when large numbers of basking sharks are to be expected in the area.
Paul Renolds, from the Blue Planet Aquarium, who studied the photos, said: “It is virtually impossible to actually identify, but this is the time of year when large numbers of basking sharks, the second largest shark species in the world after whale sharks, head towards waters off the Isle of Man. ”

What bothers me is that the head shape doesn't look right for the posted whales. The whales have more rounded heads, while the monster's looks flat with a rounded snout. Well first of, the seal you keep posting pictures of is a leopard seal, you don't get them in the UK, only the 2 seals I posted pictures of an neither of them fit the criteria. I can see how it looks like a leopard seal though, but then even a leopard seal can't cause 2 humps like that, the 2 humps would make it far too long so it would have to be 2 of them. But as I said no leopard seals around the UK. So it being a leopard s... [More]

But as I said no leopard seals around the UK. So it being a leopard seal is ruled out. The head isn't as square as it appears, remember it's a blurry rubbish image and to be honest it's the usual "monster" picture. If this wasn't such a ba... [More]

The first picture doesn't look anything like a whale. Was the second taken by the guy as well, or is it just a whale pic tossed in to make people assume that's what this was?? In any case, that's NOT the mouth of a basking shark.

I thought the head did look more like a seal. Couldn't the body shot be two seals? People keep saying this is too big for a seal. What is the scale being generated from? The head pic, to me, looks like it is 10 to 20 degrees off from being a profile shot, so we are looking into the mouth actually. That would suggest that the lips on the mouth are rounded toward the lower jaw. And this is something I've seen in the local seal pics, but not the whales. I'll put a crude Paint pic to show what I mean. Also the seals seem to sometimes stick out their tongues when they call out, and the whales not a... [More]

Dolphin?

I still think its a Whale. Its tongue is too wide to be a Seal tongue, its head is too broad, and its skin refracts light in the same way a wet whale or dolphin does.
