Last seen in Britain in 2,500 BC the new elk was born through the efforts of estate owner Paul Lister.
In an effort to bring biodiversity into the Highlands of Scotland millionaire Paul Lister has brought elk back to the country and aims to bring in other animals not readily found in Britain.
The great obstacle to biodiversity in the Highlands is, paradoxically, an animal that most people, Paul included, hold in affection: the deer. There has been an explosion in red deer numbers. According to Scottish Natural Heritage, they’ve doubled since the 1960s.

http://www.alladale.com/staying-at-alladale/accommodation/eagles-crag--ghillies-rest.html Taken from your link. I find this very ironic - "The living area features high ceilings with a beautiful deer antler chandelier and wood-burning stove."

Easier prey for humans. After all.. were there not a group down in wales killing deer just for their antlers? For every one who wants to reintroduce proper wildlife to the proper areas.. there's a band of humans with guns chomping at the bit to be the first to bag one. -.- its actually champing at the bit, if you want to be historically accurate with grammar and all

In the deer family (Cervidae), only the larger moose (Alces alces), which is called an "elk" in Europe, and the sambar (Rusa unicolor) rival the elk in size. Elk are similar to the Red Deer (Cervus elap... [More]

To be honest, as a Briton, I can say that no one I've ever met from here calls a Moose an 'Elk'. It's a Moose in Britain, the only place I've ever heard a Moose being referred to as an Elk is Sweden.

I love watching our elk herd (40+) in the early morning. Anybody who wants to re-introduce these magnificent creatures into an ecosystem that can support them is ok in my book.
