Planet discovered orbiting two stars

Astronomers have identified a Saturn-sized planet 200 light years away orbiting around two stars.
It has been likened to the planet Tatooine in the Star Wars movies in which Luke Skywalker is seen watching two suns setting. "It's the first one that circles two stars, so it's a fundamentally different kind of planet," said lead researcher Laurance Doyle.
If you could stand on the surface of Kepler-16b, you'd have two shadows. At sunset, you would see an orange star about the size of the sun and next to it a much fainter red star. As the stars slipped toward the horizon, they would change places in the sky, like partners in a square dance.

are they sure it's 2 stars and ones not just a brown dwarf "to big to be a planet, to small to be a star" would be awsome to see though.

While I admit I have virtually no knowledge on the subject, doesn't being a star outright disable an objects ability to be a planet? I mean, aren't they classified as two vastly different types of objects?

The universe is amazing and vast. It humbles a person. Humankind has only been to the moon. It makes one think how primitive we really are depite our technology.

I bet it's too hot to be inhabitable, unlike Tatooine.

I always knew binary stars would have planets. There is absolutely no reason to think otherwise. Whether they are stable enough to allow life to evolve and flourish, that is another topic. I would bet there are billions of the multiple star systems with habitable planets. I remember the book "Contact" written by Carl Sagan, one of the main reasons they never scanned binary star systems, was based on an opinion that planets couldn't form there, or are too unstable to harbor intelligent life. I believe that is very premature. It is even thought that population 2 stars would be planet-less. I und... [More]

UFO monster, it's over a hundred degrees below zero. If you find that warm, I have a nice seaside resort property in Antarctica for you. It would be nice if people read the articles before commenting...

Agreed! We should be aware of what we are talking about before saying anything which sometimes inappropriate to the topic that is being discussed. Ok. Let's go back to the topic. Actually, discussions about topics like this is absolutely interesting. That's why I really like science. It makes me learn things that could be applied in daily living and it let me learn the "whats", the "hows", and the "whys" of everything in the universe. And speaking about the discovery of exoplanets, I've learned recently that citizen science racks up another win with Planet Hunters. The search for human friendl... [More]
