Kepler-22b is at just the right distance from its star for liquid water to exist on its surface.
It is one of the most tantalising and promising planet discoveries ever made, with the Earth-like world being a prime candidate for life. NASA announced the new find along with the discovery of over 1,000 other planets orbiting distant stars by the Kepler space telescope bringing its total quota up to 2,326 extrasolar worlds.
NASA's planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft has confirmed the discovery of its first alien world in its host star's habitable zone — that just-right range of distances that could allow liquid water to exist — and found more than 1,000 new explanet candidates.
