Kepler-22b is at just the right distance from its star for liquid water to exist on its surface.
It is one of the most tantalising and promising planet discoveries ever made, with the Earth-like world being a prime candidate for life. NASA announced the new find along with the discovery of over 1,000 other planets orbiting distant stars by the Kepler space telescope bringing its total quota up to 2,326 extrasolar worlds.
NASA's planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft has confirmed the discovery of its first alien world in its host star's habitable zone — that just-right range of distances that could allow liquid water to exist — and found more than 1,000 new explanet candidates.

We, Earth humans, should learn how to care about our own race and planet before even thinking about getting somewhere else.

Oh, snap? Well as others have said its a shame we'll never be able to go there or send a rover in our lifetime, but uplifting news none the less.

We, Earth humans, should learn how to care about our own race and planet before even thinking about getting somewhere else. Agreed thus the title.

I wonder what a 200 pound person would weigh there? Sounds like Calif. to me besides that! Sign me up. We don't know the mass or density of the planet, so the gravity at its surface is also an unknown quantity. Ground based telescopes that can track subtle movements of star, caused by the planet's gravity, will allow the mass and density to be inferred. This work is planned for the middle of 2012. These figures should allow us to decide if Kepler 22b is a rocky planet; a a larger version of Earth, or a gaseous ice ball, like a smaller brother of Neptune. If the planet has a composition similar... [More]

Not likely. It's 600 light years away. 1 light year is roughly 6 trillion miles, so 600 ly is 3,527,175,223,910,164 miles. Even with our fastest, current space tech (new horizons), it would still take 11,612,361 years to get there. Yes, Our nearest star is 4 light years away and that would take many decades for a probe to reach it. With our current technology we humans are stone age compared to the vastness of space.

@ oversword.. realy? out of this whole article this is the brilliant scheme you can come up with... nature is manufactured to survive, yes some may die, the weak to put it bluntly. If it had to come to living on a planet with less or more gravity our bodies would adjust and so would our kids along with any foreign material.
