Three simple 'V' shaped carvings uncovered in the oldest part of the city have puzzled experts.
The archaeological dig itself is politically sensitive - conducted by the Israeli government, funded by a Jewish organization and is taking place in a Palastinian neighbourhood. Toss into the mix three mysterious markings and you've got the makings of a good mystery that even the experts can't solve. Despite their unknown origins or purpose these aren't the only markings of their kind, British explorer Montague Parker found a similar marking in an underground tunnel while searching for the lost treasures of the Jewish Temple in 1909-1911.
Mysterious stone carvings made thousands of years ago and recently uncovered in an excavation underneath Jerusalem have archaeologists stumped.
