Quasicrystals were thought impossible to occur naturally until geologists came across some in Russia.
Israeli researcher Daniel Schechtman first described the unusual crystals back in 1980, their unusual properties stem from their unconventional structure that is somewhere between crystal and glass. Most thought that the quasicrystals were impossible, that was until samples were retrieved from Russia's Koryak mountains. Scientists now believe the crystals came to Earth on meteorites.
Examples of a crystal previously thought to be impossible in nature may have come from space, a study shows. Quasicrystals have an unusual structure - in between those of crystals and glasses.
