A newly translated tablet from ancient Mesopotamia has provided a unique look at early humour.
The 'joke book' includes a number of riddles and jokes that while difficult to interpret today would have been considered highly amusing at the time. Some of the jokes in the book for which the answer is missing are so obscure that their true meaning may never be fully understood.
Few riddles in the Akkadian language survive. It was commonly used by the ancient Babylonians and other civilisations around the area of present-day Iraq. The tablet dates to the time of the Biblical Exodus, and is thought to have been written near the Persian Gulf.

I suppose a joke from Biblical times might be: Why did the chicken cross the road? Because the LORD was about to Smite it.
