Björn Olsen and his team discovered the deadly bacteria in samples of seawater off the Antarctic coast.
The Escherichia coli bacteria is of great concern as it appears to be resistant to most known anti-biotics making it more dangerous than the infamous superbug MRSA. While local wildlife does not appear to be infected the bacteria poses enough of a risk for local Antarctic stations to be on the alert and to reassess how they handle their waste disposal.
Björn Olsen of Uppsala University in Sweden and colleagues took seawater samples between 10 and 300 metres away from Chile's Antarctic research stations, Bernardo O'Higgins, Arturo Prat and Fildes Bay.
