Does a fear of spiders make them bigger ?

Research has suggested that people scared of spiders are likely to perceive them as larger than they are.
The study found that sufferers of arachnophobia were likely to exaggerate the size of any spiders they encountered. "If one is afraid of spiders, and by virtue of being afraid of spiders one tends to perceive spiders as bigger than they really are, that may feed the fear, foster that fear, and make it difficult to overcome," said Professor Michael Vasey. "When it comes to phobias, it is all about avoidance as a primary means of keeping oneself safe."
The irrational fear of spiders is believed to affect as many as half of women and girls, and up to one in six males. And the latest findings explain why many sufferers hold out their arms shrieking "it was that big" when the reality of the situation turns out to be much less scary.

I agree, don't look Still Waters...but my comment was a very accurate deion. Tarantulas are quite docile and rarely bite (usually only if threatened). They make excellent pets and will get to know a person and actually seem to get a kick out of walking on their owners. I have heard they make very good pets. Not for me though Do not click if you suffer arachnophobia A nest of daddy longlegs on a tree. EW! *I must not click*

I have heard they make very good pets. Not for me though They all make awesome pets, but depending on the species some are quite handable very gentle and docile actually, other species are skittish prone to flight, and others still will readily bite. The New World species have urticating hairs they can kick off with their hind legs one has to be careful handling the silk on substrate or handling their pets. Old World species appear to be more aggressive overall with stronger venom but lack urticating hairs. It all depends on the owner's experience in proper tarantula husbandry. *I must not cli... [More]

Had a pretty big spider drop down on me the other day. I don't have a phobia about them or anything, but I'd prefer it if they'd, you know, keep to themselves. Interesting study, though.

This Is true actually... If you think about it, say if you're afraid of a bully for example.. Fearing them will only make them bigger and larger! If you fight them of and don't be scared of them, they'd get smaller. This Is true actually... If you think about it, say if you're afraid of a bully for example.. This one is 5ft 11. (I like spiders cos a home with a big spider is a home with no flies. I hate flies.)

Actually, Device has brought up a very good point here. While irrational fear of common spiders is a bit silly, respect for spiders (especially species you're unfamiliar with) is a very good thing. Don't go around picking up spiders that you don't know (as in what they are). Spider bites can be very nasty. I've seen first hand what a Brown Recluse bite can result in...gives one a healthy dose of respect for these amazing little critters. Yeah, I work a tech job, but it's situated in the middle of a UPS warehouse. When I was first hired on I noticed a Harvestmen on the wall and was about an inc... [More]
