How much would it cost to build a pyramid ?

If we were to build the Great Pyramid today, how much would it cost to do so based on the original plan ?
Even with access to the latest construction vehicles, building the pyramid would still be a huge undertaking. Thought to have taken as long as 20 years to construct 4,500 years ago, even with modern technology it could still cost as much as $5 billion to build. The original workers are thought to have used a ramp system to put one block in to place every five minutes of its two decade build time.
Even with cranes, helicopters, tractors and trucks at our disposal, it would be tough to construct the Great Pyramid of Giza today. Its construction 4,500 years ago is so astounding in some people's eyes that they invoke mystical or even alien involvement.

Get a Western Government to build it and it will probably cost $500B.

Ridiculous Clad.... Free labor, and the ability of the Pharoah to just take whatever he needed meant that everything was free for the pharoah. It does not mean someone did not have to make it, or gather the materials, or grow the food, but it does mean not a single grain of rice had to be paid to make it happen. You are very much projecting 21st century economics into the past 6 thousand years. The pharoah was a GOD. Even today, if a man who people agreed was GOD came forward and said he needed a pyramid built, he'd have as much free labor and materials as people could afford to donate. If you... [More]

They worshipped the Pharaohs...we don't worship politics. Don't let the politicians know that.

It wouldn't cost me anything, but the price of the rock. I would make a machine that used opposing magnetic forces against each other to create an negative magnetic pulse. Send this pulse in to your four ton brick, and watch as is repels the earths magnetic pull. You should probably anchor it down first.

Don't let the politicians know that. Obviously he has not met any of the current Ron Paul followers. That is religous ferver if I've ever seen it.

There's no such thing as "free labor" nor a "free lunch". Mother nature demands an accounting of everything. I'm thinking about what you wrote.... and... Nope, I still think whatever the Pharoah wanted to do was free. The only ones it would cost would be the citizens of Egypt as they donated, or had taken from them, supplies and effort. I've worked at various churches in various positions at many tasks including repairs, and taken not a dime or a penny. I paid for everything and volinteered by own time and effort. Thus, the church got those services and repairs for free. It cost the church Not... [More]

Follow up comment. I was working on my yard this weekend and bought a yard of pea gravel. It cost me $38. And weighs about 2,000 pounds, or about one dollar for 50 pounds. The one dollar a pound rate is crazy high.

Slaves didn't get paid but got feed. If everyone volunteering construct it without requiring the reward, it doesn't cost much. I highly doubt that anyone would do it entirely without pay. There's also the pay for modern architects and engineers, which would have to prove that the structure is sound and safe.
