Based on a drug used in the treatment of AIDS, the gel may soon remove the need for shaving entirely.
Trials conducted using the new cidofovir based gel demonstrated that a 3% concentration provided significant reduction in beard growth. Scientists are now hoping to refine the treatment to halt beard growth completely, opening up the possibility of a future in which shaving will become a thing of the past.
The daily rub-on gel is made from a drug called cidofovir, which has been around for more than a decade and is widely used in high doses in the treatment of AIDS. During treatment, however, doctors often noticed that the drug caused alopecia - or lack of hair growth - on the faces of men who had it injected.
