The 17-year-old sold off the kidney after being approached by a buyer in an online chat room.
He received 22,000 yuan for the organ which he spent purchasing an iPad, but it wasn't long before the decision caught up with him and he is now suffering from renal deficiency and deteriorating health. Five people have been charged with illegal organ trading over the incident. While iPads and other Apple products are popular in China their price makes them unobtainable to most.
The 17-year-old boy, identified only by his surname Wang, was approached in an online chatroom and paid 22,000 yuan (£2,200) for his kidney to be used in an illegal transplant operation, the Xinhua News Agency said.
