Brain scans are being used on dogs for the first time to explore how they think and react to humans.
Canine thought processes have remained something of a mystery up until now, researchers at Emory University have developed a new scanning method to retrieve images of a dog's brain activity while it is fully awake and alert using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
"It was amazing to see the first brain images of a fully awake, unrestrained dog," said lead researcher Gregory Berns. "As far as we know, no one has been able to do this previously. We hope this opens up a whole new door for understanding canine cognition and inter-species communication."
When your dog gazes up at you adoringly, what does it see? A best friend? A pack leader? A can opener?
