Easter Island heads have full bodies

New archaological digs on Easter Island have revealed tall bodies buried beneath the stone heads.
While most of the statues on the enigmatic island appear only as heads protruding from the ground, archaeologists have confirmed that most, if not all of them actually have intricately carved bodies buried in the ground below them as well. The statues, or "Moai", are believed to have been built by the island's inhabitants between 1250 and 1500AD. To date, 887 of them have been found.

"Those statues which are the most photographed are standing in the quarry," said Jo Anne Van Tilburg, director of the Easter Island Statue Project. "So it's understandable that the general public didn't have a clue that those statues had bodies."
First Van Tilburg documented the island’s statues and those that have been removed to museums; there are 887 inventoried, though she says the number is closer to 1,000. Then she began the next phase of work to reveal what lay beneath the ground -- covered up not intentionally by men, but through centuries of exposure to the environment.

This is the non-story of the 21st century... it has been known for DECADES that the Easter Island statues have buried bodies. What's next, is somebody going to prove that reed ships can cross the Atlantic ocean?

That site says the statues were made between 1250 and 1500 ad. Maybe 500 years is a long time but they seem so much older than that maybe its the depth of their burial or the mystery of origin... Just saying I didn't know how old they were but that seems like a typo.

The ones that are buried are at the base/ on the lower slopes of the Rano Raraku quarry. Erosion here has been dramatic. I notice a change just between 1977 and 2003 when I first and last visited. If you look at images from Routledge's expedition you can see a difference also. However the big erosion was after all the trees were gone and during the periods of stravation all the vegetation was probably eaten also, the bare slopes eroded heavily.

I went back and looked at some of Routledge's images and her expedition also excavated them. There was an earlier question if this had been done earlier, so yes it was. http://www.granger.com/results.asp?search=1&screenwidth=1600&tnresize=200&pixperpage=40&searchtxtkeys=moai&lastsearchtxtkeys=Moai&withinresults=&searchphotographer=&lstformats=&lstorients=132&nottxtkeys=&captions=&randomize= https://play.google.com/store/search?c=books&q=routledge+easter+island+1919
