Gary Connery has become the first person to ever jump from a plane without deploying a parachute.
The 42-year-old stuntman instead donned a wingsuit to help slow his fall and to glide in to land amongst a huge pile of over 18,000 cardboard boxes. While Connery was equipped with a parachute in case something went wrong he didn't use it at all during the descent which saw him falling at speeds of up to 80mph.

"I have been training and planning for this record attempt for many years now and I am so proud to have achieved a world first," he said. "I want to thank everyone involved for their support and belief in me because this really has been a team effort. "I was absolutely fine afterwards. I was completely buzzing."
A stuntman is thought to have become the first person to jump out of a helicopter and land safely without deploying a parachute. Gary Connery, 42, used a "wingsuit" to make his descent from 2,400ft (730m) above Oxfordshire.

I saw the landing....the flight/freefall was awesome but I kept thinking he looked like "Rocky" in drag...... Flying Squirrel all the way baby!!!! I've been looking for a world-record glide ratio for wingsuits. I can't find much besides the 2.5 glide ratio as stated by wiki. Do you think it would be possible for them to stall close to the ground as to land without aid? In theory this should work, but in practice I think the wingsuits and the people wearing them would have to be more highly tuned.

Jeb Corliss as been saying for years that he would attempt to jump out of a plane and glide down towards the ground then pull up and land on a up-hill ramp. He broke both his legs recently when he clipped a cliff side in his wingsuit so it might... [More]

I don't really know anything about it but it seems the conditions at the landing point would be crucial to being able to flair/stall at just the right moment. Any wind from the wrong direction and you'd suddenly find yourself all dressed up and ... [More]

So he DID have a parachute, misleading Yeah he had one just in case something went wrong but he didn't use it.

Sounds like a thrill...I'd never do it. That was very risky and wing suites depend upon air currents going in the right direction. If the wind were to change he could have been in serious trouble.

A person with a wingsuit has enough momentum, and too small of a wing surface to be significantly affected by wind currents. Only strong gusts or turbulence would have an overly detrimental effect.

I don't understand people like this. To me, it's akin to a drug user always looking for a better high. I don't understand what makes them so disatisfied with life in general, or unable to find joy without risking their lives. But... to each his own. Glad he survived.
