'Smoking vaccine' developed

Scientists have created a vaccine that can remove all pleasure derived from nicotine in the body.
While the vaccine isn't ready for use in humans yet it has proved effective in mice with an 85% nicotine reduction. "As far as we can see, the best way to treat chronic nicotine addiction from smoking is to have these Pacman-like antibodies on patrol, clearing the blood as needed before nicotine can have any biological effect," said Prof Ronald Crystal.

While similar techniques have been attempted before, none were able to produce a sufficient enough number of antibodies to stop the nicotine from entering the brain. In the new research, scientists have used a special virus that infects the liver and turns it in to a factory able to produce enough of the antibodies to do the job.
Smokers could one day be immunised against nicotine so they gain no pleasure from the habit, according to researchers in the US.

Word of warning, vaccines will be the end of us. How about this, be a strong person ans stop. Dont rely on pills or anything else. Stop being a weak willed person, and just stop. Its that easy. All it takes is will power to quit if one just puts there mind to it. But half the reason why alot of smokers won't quit is because they enjoy it. Spoken like a true non-smoker.

They make marajuana and other drugs illegal because it's a bad thing but they allow Cig smoking. I guess Lung Cancer and COPD isn't that bad. Or maybe Uncle Sam likes that 100 billion a year on the taxes.

I agree with mxcx - it's a question of your will-power, actually. Friend of mine, heavily addicted to smoking, has quit just like that only with his power of will. My parents too. Surely, the stopping smoker must take abstinence syndrome into account, but personally I don't think it's that big deal.

I wonder when the world will realise that smoking is caused by anxiety neurosis ( or whatever new name is currently in vogue for it ) You are tense, and nicotine relieves tension. But then when it wears off, you get a re-bound effect, you get tense and light up again. Any relief of tension will create a rebound when the agent that relieved the tension departs. Hence in the old movies where sex scenes were forbidden by the censor, the post-coital cigarette was a staple, you saw the couple light up, but not the preceding release of sexual tension, rebounding into the need for a ciggy. Could it b... [More]

How would this be, lets say the Government decides you have to eat broccoli or peanuts or starts prohibition on soda pop. Uncle Sam, quit sticking your nose up my rear. The main reason nicotine is so hard to quit is it acts as a stimulant, or a relaxant, (releases endorphins) and helps with pain it just depends on ones mood and thought processes. I wonder if this "vaccine" eliminates pleasure period. I agree that the government should stay out of one's business. But they don't on everything... [More]
