Was 774AD 'red crucifix' a supernova ?

A mysterious red cross in the sky in 774AD may have been a previously unrecognised supernova explosion.
The strange cross-shaped glow in the skies over Britain was reported in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle over 1200 years ago. Supernovas are huge and violent explosions that occur at the end of the life cycle of some giant stars, it is now believed that there may be a correlation between this event and the mysterious spike in carbon-14 levels observed in Japanese cedar tree rings that was reported a few weeks ago.A supernova may have actually been the mysterious "Red Crucifix" in the sky that is cited in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle for the year 774.
