The former Prime Minister received a full MoD briefing after expressing concerns over UFO disclosure.
In 1998 Nick Redfern wrote to Number 10 requesting disclosure of all information pertaining to UFO sightings and reports. Concerned about the release of such data, Blair asked the Ministry of Defence for a full briefing on the topic and was told that while the MoD had only a limited interest in UFOs they felt that it was important to remain "open minded" about the possibility of aliens.
In his response to Redfern Blair stated that some data could be released subject to certain clauses including privacy and confidentiality. He concluded by saying that "there is no Government sponsored research into the UFO phenomena and there are no plans to initiate such work." The details of the exchange have been made available as part of 6,700 pages of correspondances released by the National Archives.[!gad]In 1998 Nick Redfern wrote to Number 10 requesting disclosure of all information pertaining to UFO sightings and reports. The advice was requested by Number 10 in 1998 as the government introduced the Freedom of Information Act, allowing members of the public to seek details about "alien lifeforms".
