Police in England are investigating reports of a lion on the loose following multiple sightings.
Armed officers and a police helicopter have been called in to search the area for signs of the creature, reports have suggested that the lion may have escaped from a local zoo or circus. Colchester Zoo director Anthony Tropeano was asked to analyze a photograph taken by a member of the public that allegedly showed the animal in a field, however the image was of too low a quality to provide a conclusive identification.

"It's a beautiful day so we want people to go out and enjoy themselves, but if they do wish to go for a country walk and use the fields and footpaths we ask them to be a bit cautious," said a police spokesman.
Police in Essex are investigating reports that a lion has been spotted in a field near St Osyth. Police - who have told residents to enjoy the bank holiday but "be cautious" - are looking for signs after the sighting off Earls Hall Drive.

I have heard of the Australian situation recently (here on UM), the cats become larger after just a few generations in the wild apparently, it would no be surprise if there was a similar situation over here. This would cover some of the sightings in the UK of 'larger' cats. True, but there are certain genetic limits, I doubt you will ever get a domestic cat anywhere near the size of a cougar, much less a lion! I believe a Maine Coon is one of the largest of the domestic cats (excluding hybrids like the Savannah) and it's somewhere around 25 pounds in a large male. Genetic limits can be very fr... [More]

I believe a Maine Coon is one of the largest of the domestic cats (excluding hybrids like the Savannah) and it's somewhere around 25 pounds in a large male. Genetic limits can be very frustrating. Several people and I have been trying to breed bigger Flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) by crossing the largest individuals we can find. We have gotten them up to sizes with 3" traps, but so far your kids are safe. Thanks for the cats info Those Flytraps sound interest... [More]

I've just found this, it's an interesting read imo The Essex lion farce http://blogs.kentonl...lion-farce.aspx "Of course, despite this farcical affair, it doesn't explain the fact as to why for the last two-hundred or so years, peope have reported seeing large black cats, and slightly smaller puma-like cats around Ongar Marshes, Epping Forest, Brentwood etc. It also doesn't explain that in the last week I've received 11 reports of black leopard from various parts of Kent and Sussex and none of these were investigated by police helicopters." Perhaps folk have been claiming to see large predato... [More]

If feral cats become larger after just a few generations, large feral cats would have been spotted and easily documented all over the world for generations.

This is near my area and it was in the news that the police launched a £25,000 2 day search for the beast, and it turned out to be a large ginger pet cat called Tom. So, it's nothing.

If feral cats become larger after just a few generations, large feral cats would have been spotted and easily documented all over the world for generations. Cats going feral and growing to four feet long? All because there's a gap for a large predator? So I suppose we now have foxes which are eight feet long with six inch canine teeth and rats as big as dogs. The Scottish Wild Cat, by it's very name and nature, is "feral" and is similar to the breed domestic cats are descended from. That being the case, and the fact that they have literally thousands of square miles of countryside over which t... [More]

I hope this doesn't end badly Usually cases like this they do end up killing the animal because tranquilizers take to long to take effect so they usually just have to put the animal down. Also if it is actually a lion I couldnt see them wanting to take any chances on it attacking someone.

I heard the Essex lion was found in the back of someone's wardrobe. When they asked what it was doing, it replied: "Narnia business!"
