One of the world's oldest domestic parrots, Tabu, has died after uttering 'cheerio' as his last word.
The African Grey had belonged to 89-year-old Nina Morgan after being originally rescued from a Tanzanian pet trader in 1957. Parrots can live quite a long time and Tabu was considered one of the oldest with Mrs Morgan attributing his longevity to a lifetime of being spoilt. A highly vocal companion, Tabu would always say 'cheerio' to her when she left the house or went to bed and would even call out to her when someone was at the door because of her bad hearing.
"He was a very intelligent bird and very clever," she said. "We never taught him to talk, he picked everything up. The night before he died I went up to bed and he said 'cheerio' to me from his cage. It was the last thing that he said."
The African Grey parrot Tarbu, believed to be one of the world's oldest domestic parrots, uttered his final farewell to Nina Morgan, 89, as she made her way to bed.
