The Star Wars inspired robot has been designed to assist in fighting fires and to throw grenades.
Known as ASH ( Autonomous Shipboard Humanoid ), the humanoid robot would help out on warships and could prove invaluable in the event of a fire as it is able to operate in smoke-filled environments. With human-like movements ASH is able to climb ladders and can even read human gestures using infrared cameras and sensors on its face. It would also be able to hold and operate a number of fire extinguishing tools.
"It is walking now and will start testing on a Navy ship early next year but that does not mean that it is complete," said Professor Dennis Hong. "It still needs a lot of things done, such as protection against heat and flames, sensors, navigation and fire-fighting behaviours."
ASH or Autonomous Shipboard Humanoid will have the capacity to operate in smoke-filled areas, climb ladders and react to human gestures with the help of infrared cameras and sensors on its 'face'.
