An unknown species of harvestman with a leg span of 33cm has been found during a TV production.
Dr. Peter Jäger had been in Laos to film scenes for a TV show and was spending some of his spare time collecting spider specimens from caves in Khammouan province. "In one of the caves I discovered a harvestman that was absolutely huge," he said. The giant insect had a leg span of 33cm making it one of the largest in the world, however because Dr. Jäger specializes in spiders he was unable to properly categorize the new find.

"It's a shame we can't identify such an exceptional discovery correctly, i.e. its species," he said. "We haven't dealt with these and related genera from China and neighbouring South East Asia before. Specialists are also unavailable due to the fact that descriptive taxonomy is no longer the main focus of research funding."[!gad]Dr. Peter Jäger had been in Laos to film scenes for a TV show and was spending some of his spare time collecting spider specimens from caves in Khammouan province. A scientist at the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt has discovered a harvestman with a leg span of more than 33 centimetres.

I heard when you're asleep these guys will wrap their long legs around your head and perch over your mouth like the thing from aliens. Then it poops.

Wow! 33 cm. That is a third of a meter, over a foot. I've seen a few big daddy longlegs (What we in Oregon call 'em) but they probably topped out at about 7 inches from foot to foot. So the critter stood about 2 inches high with the legs going up and back down. I skimmed the article, and did not see if these spiders were larger, or if they just had way freakishly long legs.

Here in the US Daddy longlegs are spiders and if you google grandaddy or daddy longlegs you get spiders. In reality Harvestman spiders are actually not even spiders they are a relative of spiders.
