Mayan people call for end of doomsday myth

The Guatamalan government has been accused of perpetuating the doomsday myth for financial gain.
As the end date of the ancient Mayan calendar approaches the Mayan people themselves are getting a little tired of being associated with the end of the world. Now some of them are speaking out in Guatemala because they believe the country's government has been perpetuating the myth deliberately to encourage tourism."We are speaking out against deceit, lies and twisting of the truth, and turning us into folklore-for-profit," said group leader Felipe Gomez. "They are not telling the truth about time cycles." Archaeologists have maintained that the end of the Mayan calendar simply represents the transition from one cycle to the next and not that the ancient people had predicted that December 21st 2012 was the end of the world.
Guatemala's Mayan people accused the government and tour groups on Wednesday of perpetuating the myth that their calendar foresees the imminent end of the world for monetary gain.
