According to a new study conducted by a group of psychologists in Canada, no, it does not.
The full moon has often been associated with an increase in crime, strange behaviour and other weirdness. As many as 80 percent of nurses and 63 percent of doctors believe that there is a measurable increase in mental health issues during the time of a full moon. To put this idea to the test researchers studied more than 770 patients over a period of three years. They concluded that the lunar cycle appeared to have had nothing at all to do with the patients' symptoms.
"The analyses revealed no link between the incidence of psychological problems and the four lunar phases," said psychologist Professor Genevieve Belleville. The symptoms observed during the study were instead attributed to the mental health of the patients.
Sudden crime waves, injuries and other random acts have been blamed on the monthly phenomenon, sometimes by doctors, nurses and the police. But research by a group of psychologists in Canada has finally debunked the myth, proving that the lunar cycle has no influence on these freak occurrences.
