A woman who tried to kill a snake by setting it on fire inadvertently managed to burn her own house down.
The unnamed woman from Texas had been cleaning her windows when she encountered the troublesome reptile. In an effort to get rid of it she took some petrol and doused the snake before asking her son to come and set it on fire. The tables turned however when the serpent slithered in to some nearby bushes, setting them alight as well. The blaze promptly spread, engulfing both her and her neighbor's houses in flames.

"We were trying to kill a snake with fire," she said over the phone to the emergency operator. The fire department was promptly dispatched but despite their best efforts the house was almost completely obliterated by the blaze.

The fate of the snake is currently unknown.
A woman and her son in Texarkana, Texas set fire to a snake, which set fire to some brush, which set fire to their house, and the one next door.

Where I live in Texas, we see LOTS of copperheads, coral snakes, and water mocassins. (Shudder) I was actually bit by a copperhead when I was little. I was lucky. I was able to yank my hand back before it injected too much venom in me. I guess I just have a phobia of snakes. Now, chicken and grass snakes, I leave alone. But, those poisonous snakes.... I live in Florida and we got all kinds of snakes. I don't kill any of the native ones poisonous or not, they are a necessary part of the environment. Setting any living thing on fire is cruel.

This is totally ridiculous! I've thrown baby rattlers out of my yard (and believe me, they are mean even as babies!) but never did the thought of setting them on fire come across my mind. It's no wonder that the snake gets associated sometimes with the devil, if you've ever heard an angered snake, you'll think twice about messing with them. In all honesty, I thought this was an urban legend when I first read this. I know there is one where a couple of hunters tied dynamite to a dog/rabbit (however the story goes) to watch it run away and blow up, however, the animal runs under the hunters new ... [More]
