In a new paper, author Dale King proposes that the actual date was much earlier - December 26th, 2004.
Last year paranoia over a potential 'end of days' coinciding with the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21st reached fever pitch. Ultimately, as many predicated, nothing happened at all and the doomsday date came and went without incident. Some doomsayers have refuted the date as incorrect, believing that the actual apocalypse will take place in the future. Author Dale King however has an alternative theory - he believes that the Mayan calendar actually ended eight years earlier on December 26th, 2004.

"The Maya correlated the beginning date of their calendar to the birth of their deities," he wrote. "Yet, according to Maya researcher John Major Jenkins, the GMT correlation - the correlation of the Maya calendar with the Gregorian calendar - was based on a text found in Palenque, a text interpreted as stating that the current Great Cycle began when the deity known as “First Father” was eight years old and came to Palenque. If what Jenkins says is true then the calendar should begin when the deity was born, not eight years later."[!gad]Last year paranoia over a potential 'end of days' coinciding with the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21st reached fever pitch. The change in the timing, according to King, also has implications for the occurrence of real world events as they are related to the Maya-Aztec myths about catastrophic events at the "end of days".

Maybe they were lazy to create another one. That's what makes this worse... They did create another one, well many actually. lol The Mayan calenders go on for a very long time. It was only the end of the current calender.

I, personally, don't buy into all of this gloom and doom crap by either Christians or Mayans but I read this really interesting story called 'The 6th Extinction' or something like that. Zombie folklore exploiting the Mayan prophecies as truth. The interesting thing about it was that like, some plant that would alter human DNA and turn people into well... walking, exploding zombies was what the Mayans were actually referring to... it just took like, three years to kick in or something. I know it is highly unlikely but what if something like that DID happen? What if there was some sicko disease ... [More]

The Mayans aren't fakes. We interpreted the calendar the way we want to. Some people have made money off of this. IT's time to stop beating a dead horse.

I admit i was one of those believers. But seriously you guys just need to stop with this end of the world crap. Stop extending the date cause it will never happen(At least In my lifetime that is)

To say that this whole end of the world Mayan calendar thing was overblown is putting it mildly. Like Y2K another boondoggle prediction of disaster that didn't happen. Wound not be surprised to look back in ten or twenty years and find Global Warming in the same category.

Ridiculous. Like Harold Camping, they just refuse to admit it is all nonsense. And like Harold Camping, they will look like fools again the next time.

Proclaiming the date was wrong and that it was actually further in the past is a dumb way to make more money off of tv shows and books. They need to proclaim it is actually July 20th 2013.This way its a Saturday and people can party like its 1999.....oh, thats been done too. nevermind.
