The new species of tarantula was discovered by villagers in the northern part of the war-torn country.
With a leg span that would cover a human face, the Poecilotheria rajaei variety of arachnid is a completely new species that had gone undiscovered until some locals took a specimen they'd killed to a spider expert who had been visiting the region. Researcher Ranil Nanayakkara and his team spent days searching the undergrowth for signs of the creature's living relatives.

"Days of extensive searching in every tree hole and bark peel were rewarded with a female and, to our satisfaction, several juveniles too," he said. The spiders were named after Michael Rajakumar Purajah, the police inspector who helped the team navigate Sri Lanka's war-torn countryside.
A new species of venomous tarantula has been discovered – and it’s as big as your face. It was tracked down in war-ravaged northern Sri Lanka after villagers took a spider to experts after they had killed it in 2009.

To all those people calling this 'awesome' or 'beautiful', well, you're absolutely entitled to those views, but I personally think you're mad... These 'creatures' are the most terrifying creatures alive, I would rather be in a river full of crocodiles than a room with a turantula, they terrify me, they petrify me, they are the reason I thank whatever lord there might be that I live in my homeland of Britain. South America? Australia? India? No thanks, I will never in my life visit them because there's even a slight chance I'd bump into these things. To sum up...I hate these things....I truly d... [More]

It's funny how my spider phobia at the same time tells me to cover myself and freeze in fear, and at the same time I want to pet those cute...

Species of Brown Recluse are often identified by the patterns of its leg sizes. I am not sure what it is but it is a completely harmless species. Those pokey things are called the spinnerets. That is where the silk for their webs are spun from.

I'm from Belgium, we only have common house spiders, some of which can grow to a size I've never seen, so I'm thinking certain species are crossbredding with each other due to the climate changes all over the world. We're now experiencing a weird spring. It's still 4 °C outside while it should be inbetween 14 °C - 25 °C. I think once the warm weather continuously begins, we'll be flooded with spiders. Either that, or most native spiders have not survived the long winter or they have emigrated too far.
