Today is the 80th anniversary of the first modern sighting of Scotland's elusive Loch Ness Monster.
It has been 80 years since hotel manageress Aldie Mackay first witnessed what she described to be a 'whale-like fish' on April 14th, 1933. Since then the Scottish lake has become home to one of the world's best known cryptozoological mysteries, bringing in thousands of tourists every year. To celebrate the occasion, a group of monster buffs will take a boat out on to the loch and raise a glass of whiskey in tribute to the first sighting.
Among those celebrating will be Adrian Shine, leader of the Loch Ness Research Project. "Even without Nessie, Loch Ness is a place of great beauty and remarkable intrigue, but the first modern sighting by Mrs Mackay was a key date in history, not only for Loch Ness, but for Scotland as a whole," he said.[!gad]It has been 80 years since hotel manageress Aldie Mackay first witnessed what she described to be a 'whale-like fish' on April 14th, 1933. One of the world’s greatest and most enduring mysteries will be celebrated on Sunday when a special boat trip marks the 80th anniversary of the first modern sighting of the Loch Ness Monster.
