Researchers have developed a real world counterpart to Harry Potter's magical marauder's map.
The map system was devised at Carnegie Mellon and replaces magic with a bit of computer wizardry. The data from a number of security cameras around a building is analyzed by a set of special algorithms which use facial recognition, color matching and location tracking to determine where each individual is located. The resulting co-ordinates are then displayed on a map in real-time.

The system is unique because it uses several sources of information to plot a person's whereabouts and does not require that person to be carrying a tracking device. "An ideal Marauder's Map algorithm should integrate different sources of information," the research team wrote in a paper covering their findings. "Our algorithm is effective because of reliable face recognition and the combination of manifold learning with nonnegative discretization."[!gad]The map system was devised at Carnegie Mellon and replaces magic with a bit of computer wizardry. With homage to the fictional map used by Harry Potter, they came up with a solution that can effectively track people in the real world just like The Marauder's Map locates and tracks people in Harry Potter's magical world.

Well this is a comforting, welcome technology.

The article talks about one of it's potential uses in nursing homes housing dementia patients, which can "wander-off" Ok, that seems fine. Happened to a friends mother as a matter of fact. Thankfully the police found her. But for the rest it sure seems invasive, except for certain locations, but definitely not all.
