Silver has the potential to make antibiotic treatments thousands of times more effective.
The metal has been used for millennia to treat infections with Hippocrates first describing its medicinal benefits back in 400 BC. Now it looks like silver could be seeing a resurgence thanks to its effect in the treatment of modern superbugs. Experiments have indicated that silver can help improve the potency of antibiotics in the fight against resistant bacteria by several thousand times.
"Resistance is growing, while the number of new antibiotics in development is dropping," said biomedical engineer James Collins who lead the research. "We wanted to find a way to make what we have work better."
Like werewolves and vampires, bacteria have a weakness: silver. The precious metal has been used to fight infection for thousands of years.
